The use of castor oil as a hair loss remedy can be traced back thousands of years before the birth of Christ. Derived from the castor plant (Ricinus communis), castor oil is extracted from its bean which is a popular medicinal purgative.
It also has other uses such as treating acne, ringworm, athlete’s foot, skin abrasions, and sunburns among others. Due to its observed ability in boosting the immune system, experts have been using it to treat conditions like arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, and cerebral palsy.
Castor oil has an unusual composition, containing fatty acids such as oleic, linoleic, and ricinoleic acids. However, it is 99% percent ricinoleic acid, which is a potent anti-bacterial and anti-fungicidal agent. Therefore, it can protect the hair and scalp from hair-loss-causing agents.
